Compare taxi insurance UK online

What to look at when comparing taxi insurance online in the UK: the cover included, the price, the excess, the provider and any extras on the policy.

Taxi insurance is not one fixed product. Policies for private hire and public hire drivers vary in what they cover, what they cost and how they handle claims. When you compare taxi insurance online, a few points make it much easier to see which policy actually suits the way you work.

What to look at when comparing taxi insurance

1. Cover

Start with the level of cover each policy offers. Check that it covers the way you use your vehicle, whether that is pre-booked private hire, public hire from ranks and street hails, or both. You may also want to check whether these are included or available:

  • Public liability insurance, for injury or damage to members of the public connected with your work.
  • Passenger liability, for passengers who are hurt while travelling with you.
  • Legal expenses cover, to help with legal costs after an incident that was not your fault.

2. Cost

The premium is an important factor, but a lower price only tells you something when the cover behind it is the same. Compare premiums for policies with matching cover, excess and extras so you are looking at value for money rather than just the headline figure.

3. Excess

Check the excess on each policy. This is the amount you pay towards any claim. A higher excess can bring the premium down, but it needs to be an amount you could comfortably pay if you had to claim.

4. The provider's reputation

Look into how the insurer or broker deals with taxi drivers, particularly when there is a claim. Speaking to other drivers you know, or checking how a firm handles complaints, can tell you a lot. You can also check that a firm is authorised on the FCA register.

5. Additional benefits

Some taxi policies come with extras, such as breakdown cover or legal assistance, or offer them as add-ons. A replacement vehicle can also matter a great deal if you rely on your car for your income. Compare these extras alongside the main cover.

Bringing it together

Overall, it helps to look at more than one policy so you can weigh up cover and value against your own needs, rather than choosing on price alone.
