Insurance basics
Motorhome insurance explained
What motorhome insurance is, the main types of cover, from road risks and contents to liability and personal accident, and the legal basics for UK roads.
Motorhome insurance is insurance for people who own and use motorhomes. A motorhome is a vehicle that combines transport and accommodation, giving you a home on wheels for travel and leisure. Because it is both a vehicle and somewhere you live while away, motorhome insurance covers a wider range of risks than standard car insurance.
What motorhome insurance usually covers
1. Road risks
This covers the motorhome while it is driven on public roads. Depending on the level of cover, it may include accidental damage, theft and fire.
2. Contents
This covers personal belongings and contents inside the motorhome, such as appliances, furnishings and other items. Check the limits for single items and whether belongings are covered when the motorhome is parked or unattended.
3. Liability cover
This covers you if you accidentally injure someone, or damage third party property, while using the motorhome.
4. Personal accident
This covers the driver, and in some policies passengers, if they are injured or killed in an accident.
Choosing the right cover
The type and level of cover depend on the policy you choose and how you use your motorhome. Different types of motorhome may have different insurance needs, for example a factory-built motorhome compared with a self-built camper conversion. Other points to check include cover for travel abroad, breakdown cover, how many days a year you use it and where it is stored when not in use.
It is worth looking at the options available and comparing what different policies cover, not just the price.
The legal side
In the UK, any vehicle used on a public road must have at least third party motor insurance under the Road Traffic Act 1988, and motorhomes are no exception. If you are travelling abroad, it is worth checking what your policy covers outside the UK before you go.
Kompare doesn't currently offer quotes for motorhome insurance. You can see the cover we do help with on our how we work page.
