Combined insurance

Combined motor trade insurance explained: what you can combine on one policy, who it suits and when a road risks only policy may be enough.

Do you need a combined policy for your motor trade business? It depends on the work you do. Combined policies are designed for traders who work from a dedicated premises rather than from home.

If you're in the motor trade and have a premises, it's important to have the right cover for it. If your business also involves driving customers' vehicles, you'll need road risks cover too, and that can be included within a combined policy. Combined cover isn't necessary for every motor trade business, but it's often a sensible option for traders with a premises and staff.

Kompare helps traders find specialist motor trade cover. You fill in a short form and a specialist FCA-authorised broker from our panel contacts you to talk through your needs and quotes. You can read more on our motor trade insurance page or see how we work.

What can I combine on my policy?

When you take out a combined policy, you'll be asked which types of cover you'd like to include. Common options are below.

Cover for your vehicles

This brings in road risks cover for the vehicles you drive as part of your business. Like car insurance, it usually comes in three levels: third party only; third party, fire and theft; and fully comprehensive.

Cover for your premises

This can cover your premises against risks such as structural damage and vandalism. Check the policy wording for exactly what is included.

Public liability

When you work with the public, there's always a risk that someone makes a claim against you for injury or damage. Public liability cover can help if a claim is made.

Employers' liability

If you employ staff, employers' liability cover is generally a legal requirement. It covers claims from employees who are injured or become ill because of their work. You can read more on GOV.UK.
