Fleet

How many vehicles do you need for fleet insurance?

How many vehicles you need for fleet insurance varies by insurer. Many will consider a fleet from two vehicles, while others set the minimum at three or five.

Many insurers will write a fleet policy from two vehicles upwards, though some set the minimum at three or five. The exact threshold varies from insurer to insurer.

What fleet insurance is

Fleet insurance covers several vehicles under one policy, with a single renewal date and one schedule. It is used by businesses that run cars, vans or a mix of both, and it saves having to manage a separate policy for each vehicle. Read more on our fleet insurance page.

Minimum vehicle numbers explained

There is no legal minimum for a fleet, so each insurer sets its own rule. As a guide, you can typically expect:

  • From two vehicles with insurers that specialise in mini fleets
  • From three to five vehicles with many mainstream fleet schemes
  • Larger thresholds for specialist or rebate-based policies

What can be in a fleet

The vehicles do not have to be identical. A fleet can include cars, vans and other vehicle types, and in some cases vehicles owned by directors or employees rather than the business itself, as long as the business has an insurable interest.

Small fleets

Because the cut-off differs so widely, it is worth speaking to a specialist broker rather than assuming you do not qualify. If you run two or three vehicles, a broker can tell you whether a mini fleet policy is available for your business.

If your fleet shrinks

If the number of vehicles falls below the insurer's threshold during the year, the policy may continue to renewal but you may then need to move to individual policies. Telling your broker early gives you time to plan.
