Does motorbike insurance cover helmet and leathers?

Helmet and leathers cover is usually an optional add-on rather than standard on motorbike insurance. Here is what it covers and what to check.

Not automatically. Cover for your helmet, leathers and other riding gear is usually an optional add-on rather than part of a standard motorbike policy.

Protecting your riding gear

Helmets, leathers, gloves and boots can be expensive to replace, yet many standard policies do not cover them as a matter of course.

  • Helmet and clothing cover is often sold as an optional extra, paying towards kit damaged in an accident or stolen with the bike.
  • Limits and excesses apply, so check the maximum payout and whether wear and tear is taken into account.
  • Helmets after an impact may be covered even if there is no visible damage, because a helmet that has taken a knock in an accident should be replaced. Check the wording.

What is usually excluded

Everyday wear, drops while the bike is parked and gradual damage are often excluded. Kit stolen on its own, away from the bike, may not be covered either. The policy wording sets out exactly what is included.

Passenger gear

Some add-ons extend to a pillion passenger's helmet and clothing, but not all. If you regularly carry a passenger, check before you rely on it.

Is it worth adding?

If you have invested in quality protective kit, this cover may be worth considering. Keep receipts for your gear so you can support a claim.
