How can I get cheaper motorbike insurance?

Practical ways that may lower your motorbike insurance premium, from better security and lower mileage to rider training and reviewing your cover.

There are a number of ways you may be able to lower your motorbike insurance premium, including improving security, restricting your mileage, building a no-claims record and getting fresh quotes rather than auto-renewing each year.

Why premiums vary

Premiums reflect risk. Insurers look at the bike, where it is kept, how far it is ridden and the rider's age and history. Small changes to how you store, ride and protect your bike can make a difference at renewal.

Ways to bring the price down

  • Boost security with an approved immobiliser, alarm or tracker, and keep the bike in a locked garage where possible.
  • Limit your mileage and choose the right class of use, as lower annual miles usually mean a lower premium.
  • Take advanced training, such as an enhanced rider course, which some insurers recognise.
  • Protect your no-claims bonus and pay annually rather than monthly to avoid interest.

Think about the bike

If you are buying, the bike itself makes a big difference. Lower-powered machines usually cost less to insure than large or high-performance bikes. Modifications can push the price up and must be declared.

Excess

A higher voluntary excess can lower the premium, but you would pay more yourself if you claim. Only set an excess you could genuinely afford.

Don't just auto-renew

Often the biggest difference comes from getting new quotes rather than letting a policy auto-renew. With Kompare, you fill in a short form and a specialist FCA-authorised broker from our panel contacts you about motorbike insurance quotes. Read how we work for more.
