Taxi

Does taxi insurance cover any driver and any passenger?

Fare-paying passengers are covered by the hire and reward part of a taxi policy, but drivers usually have to be named. Here is how both work.

Passengers are covered as standard, but drivers are not. Most taxi policies cover named drivers only, though some insurers offer any-driver cover at extra cost.

How passenger cover works

Fare-paying passengers are protected by the hire and reward element of a taxi policy, so you do not need to name them. Hire and reward is the part of the policy that covers you to carry people for payment.

How driver cover works

Drivers are different. Most policies are arranged on a named driver basis, meaning only the people listed on the policy can drive the taxi for hire and reward. To let others drive, you would usually need:

  • To add each driver as a named driver, or
  • An any-driver policy, often used by fleets, at a higher premium

Each driver will normally need the right licence and council badge for the work, and the insurer may ask about their age, experience and claims history.

Why it matters

Allowing an unnamed person to drive your taxi for hire and reward can leave you uninsured, so always check who is listed on your certificate. This is especially important if you share a vehicle with another driver on different shifts.

Running more than one vehicle

If you run several taxis or employ drivers, a taxi fleet policy may be more practical than separate policies. See our fleet insurance page for more.
