How can I bring down the cost of taxi insurance?

Practical ways taxi drivers may lower their premium, from building a no claims discount to paying annually and shopping around at renewal.

Taxi premiums reflect the extra time you spend on the road, but there are sensible ways to keep costs in check. None of them work for every driver, and the right cover always matters more than the lowest figure.

Ways to bring the cost down

  • Build and protect a taxi no claims discount. Each claim-free year can count in your favour at renewal.
  • Pay annually instead of monthly. Monthly instalments often include interest.
  • Fit a dashcam. Some insurers take this into account.
  • Choose a higher voluntary excess, but only if you could afford to pay it if you claimed.
  • Keep your licensing and vehicle details accurate. Wrong details can lead to a refused claim later.

Shop around at renewal

Specialist taxi insurers can price the same driver very differently. Comparing quotes at renewal, rather than letting your policy roll over automatically, often makes a real difference. Before choosing on price, check that the cover still matches how you work: public or private hire, the areas you cover, who else drives the vehicle and any extras you rely on, such as public liability.

Think about the cover, not just the price

A lower premium is only useful if the policy pays out when you need it. Look at the excess, the cover level, whether a replacement vehicle is included and any limits on loss of earnings. If a cheaper quote leaves out something you need, it may cost you more in the end.
