What documents do I need for taxi insurance?

From your driving licence to your council badge and vehicle details, here are the documents taxi and private hire drivers usually need for a quote.

Having your paperwork to hand makes getting a taxi insurance quote quicker and more accurate. You will usually need your driving licence, your council taxi or private hire badge, details of the vehicle, and any proof of no claims discount or previous taxi experience.

What to have ready

Insurers typically ask for:

  • Your full UK or exchangeable driving licence
  • Your council-issued taxi or private hire driver's badge
  • The vehicle's registration, make and model
  • Your vehicle licence or plate details from the council
  • Proof of any no claims discount or taxi experience

You may also be asked whether you work public hire or private hire, which operator you drive for, the areas you work in, and whether anyone else will drive the vehicle.

If you are new to the trade

New drivers without taxi experience can still get cover, so do not worry if you cannot supply a taxi no claims record yet. Some insurers may take a private car no claims discount into account.

Why accuracy matters

Give correct details from the start. Mistakes, even honest ones, can cause problems if you need to claim, and the insurer may refuse the claim or cancel the policy. If something changes during the year, such as a new vehicle or a different licence type, tell your broker.
