How much does tradesman insurance cost?
There is no fixed price for tradesman insurance. Cost depends on your trade, the covers you choose, your limits and your claims history.
There is no fixed price for tradesman insurance. The cost depends on your trade, the covers you choose and your claims history, so the only accurate figure is a quote based on your own details.
What drives the price
Tradesman insurance is priced around your individual risk, so two tradespeople rarely pay the same. Your premium reflects factors such as:
- Your trade and how risky the work is
- The covers you bundle, such as employers' liability and tools cover
- Your public liability limit and any excess
- Your turnover, staff numbers and claims history
Your trade
A trade that involves working at height, with heat or with structural work is usually seen as higher risk than, say, decorating or garden maintenance. Declaring every activity you carry out matters, because a policy priced for one trade may not cover another.
The covers you choose
Public liability on its own will usually cost less than a policy that also includes employers' liability, tools cover and contract works. Each extra cover adds to the price, but also to what you are protected against.
Limits and excess
A higher public liability limit or a higher sum insured on tools usually adds to the premium. A higher excess can reduce it, but means you pay more yourself if you claim.
Why averages only go so far
Because every quote is built from your own details, published averages only tell you so much. The most reliable way to see what you would pay is to get tailored quotes from regulated UK brokers and weigh the price against the cover you actually get.
Getting quotes
