Ways you can save money on your motorhome or campervan insurance
General tips that may help lower the cost of motorhome and campervan insurance, from choosing the right cover and storage to named drivers and security.
Every motorhome and campervan owner would like to pay less for their insurance, as the cost can take a sizeable chunk out of the budget. Owning one is special, and having the right cover for your trips matters. The key is cover that suits your needs without paying for things you don't need.
Here are some general ways that may help bring the cost down.
Buy the cover you need
Research what cover you need before you buy. You may be offered higher levels of cover than your situation calls for, so look carefully at what each policy includes and whether it is relevant to you.
Review the value of your motorhome each year, too, so that you aren't insuring it for more or less than it is actually worth. Under-insuring can leave you short if you need to claim.
Take a specialist driving course
Driving a motorhome or campervan is quite different from driving a car, and insurers know this. Some insurers may offer a discount to drivers who have completed a recognised training course. You learn how to handle a larger vehicle, and it may help with your premium, so it can be worth asking your insurer whether they recognise any courses.
Storage
As with most vehicles, keeping your motorhome somewhere safe and secure may lower the price of your insurance. A secure garage or storage site helps keep it safe, while a vehicle left on a public road is more exposed to theft and damage.
Where it is stored also matters, as the postcode can affect the premium. Busy urban areas often cost more to insure than rural locations. Secure, accredited storage sites, which are often in quieter areas, may be worth looking into.
Named drivers
Think carefully about who you name on the policy, as adding a young or less experienced driver can push the price up noticeably. Insurers often base part of the premium on the least experienced driver named.
If someone on your policy hardly ever drives the motorhome, it may be worth considering whether they need to be on it at all.
Security
When you look for insurance, you will be asked a lot about security: whether you have an alarm, an immobiliser, a tracker and so on. That is because recognised security devices can lower the risk, which may lower the price.
Locks, alarms, immobilisers, tracking devices and cameras can all help. It is worth checking with your insurer which devices they recognise before fitting anything.
Shop around
It may seem obvious, but compare a few options before you decide, and look at the level of cover and excess as well as the price.
