Book a garage for an MOT or service

General information on MOTs, servicing and repairs: when an MOT is due, how to check MOT history and what to think about when choosing a garage.

Keeping your vehicle roadworthy means booking an MOT when it is due, and many drivers also book a regular service. This page explains the difference and what to think about when you choose a garage.

What is an MOT?

An MOT is an annual test that checks your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. In England, Scotland and Wales, most cars need their first MOT by the third anniversary of their registration, and then every year after that. Driving without a valid MOT can lead to a fine, and it may affect your insurance.

You can check a vehicle's MOT history and when its next MOT is due on GOV.UK, and you can get a free MOT reminder by text or email.

What is a service?

A service is different from an MOT. It is maintenance carried out to keep your vehicle running well, such as changing the oil and filters and checking brakes, tyres and fluids. A service is not a legal requirement, but following the manufacturer's schedule can help prevent breakdowns and keep a full service history, which can matter when you sell.

Choosing a garage

  • Use an approved MOT test centre for your MOT. These display a blue sign with three white triangles.
  • Ask for a written quote for repairs before work starts.
  • Check what is included in a service, as interim and full services differ.
  • Keep receipts and the service record for your vehicle's history.
