Does tradesman insurance cover my tools?
Tools cover is not automatic on tradesman insurance, but it can usually be added to protect your equipment against theft and accidental damage.
Tools cover is not automatic, but you can add it to most tradesman policies to protect your equipment against theft and accidental damage. For many tradespeople it is one of the most useful parts of the policy, because losing your kit can stop you working.
How tools cover works
Tools cover is an optional add-on rather than part of every policy. When included, it typically pays out for theft of and accidental damage to your equipment, helping you replace kit quickly and get back to work. The detail matters, as cover commonly varies on:
- Whether tools are covered overnight in a vehicle, and whether the van must be locked or alarmed
- The single item limit and the overall sum insured
- New-for-old versus wear-and-tear settlement
Getting the sum insured right
Make sure your sum insured reflects the real replacement cost of everything you carry, not just your most expensive item. Add up hand tools, power tools, chargers, batteries and any specialist equipment. If you under-insure, some policies reduce a claim in proportion to the shortfall.
Storing tools safely
Insurers often set conditions about where tools are kept, especially overnight. Taking tools indoors, using a lockable van vault or fitting extra van locks may help you meet those conditions. It is worth checking the policy wording against how and where you actually store your kit, and if you use a van for work, see our van insurance page too.
Hired equipment
Hired-in plant and equipment is usually treated separately from your own tools. If you regularly hire kit, mention it when you ask for quotes.
Getting quotes
Tools cover is usually added to a tradesman insurance policy alongside public liability. With Kompare, you fill in a short form and a specialist FCA-authorised broker from our panel contacts you to talk through quotes and limits. Read how we work for more.
