Impounded vehicle insurance

What happens when the police seize a car or van for having no insurance, and what you'll generally need to get it back from the pound.

Has your car or van been seized because it was being driven without insurance? It's a stressful situation, and the longer the vehicle stays in the pound, the more it can cost you.

Why vehicles are impounded

The police have powers to seize a vehicle that is being driven without insurance. Uninsured vehicles can be clamped, impounded or destroyed, and the driver may also face a fine and penalty points. You can read the rules on GOV.UK.

Getting your vehicle back

To get a seized vehicle released, you'll generally need to show proof that it is now properly insured, along with your driving licence, and pay the release fee and any storage charges, which build up each day. If the vehicle isn't claimed in time, it can be disposed of. Contact the police force or the pound holding it as soon as you can to find out exactly what they need.

Insurance after a seizure

Many insurers will raise premiums sharply if your car or van has been seized by the police, and some won't offer cover at all. Specialist insurers may be more willing to consider your case. Whatever cover you take out, answer every question honestly, including about the seizure and any related conviction, because not doing so could affect your policy.

Other cover we can help with

Kompare doesn't currently offer quotes for impounded vehicle insurance. If you have driving convictions, our convicted driver insurance page may help, and we can also help with van insurance. See how we work for more.
