Will my home contents insurance cover my motorhome contents?

If you own a motorhome in the UK and drive it on the road, it must be insured, just like a car or van. Motorhome insurance covers you for accidents and theft in the same way, but you'll also want to think about the belongings you keep on board.

For people who love to explore, a motorhome gives you the freedom to travel with the comforts of home. Because you live in it while you travel, the risks are different from an ordinary car, and a specialist policy is designed to reflect that, covering both the vehicle and, where you choose, its contents.

What are the different levels of cover?

Motorhome policies come in the same three levels as other vehicle insurance.

Fully comprehensive

This is the highest level of cover. It includes everything in third party, fire and theft, and also covers damage to your own motorhome, even if an accident was your fault.

Third party, fire and theft

This covers you if you're responsible for injury to other people or damage to their property. It also covers your motorhome if it's stolen or damaged by fire. It won't pay for repairs to your own motorhome if you cause an accident.

Third party only

This is the most basic level of cover and the minimum required by law. It pays for injury to others and damage you cause to other vehicles and property, but there is no cover for your own motorhome.

Things to check on a motorhome policy

Contents cover: whether your belongings on board are covered, and up to what limit.
European cover: how many days abroad are included and whether the cover level changes outside the UK.
Breakdown: whether recovery is included, and whether it covers a vehicle of your motorhome's size and weight.
Storage and security: where the motorhome is kept when not in use can affect your policy.
