Learner driver insurance: Practise in the family car, properly covered.

Short-term learner cover on someone else's car, without touching their no-claims. Start with the reg of the car you'll practise in.

What learner driver insurance can cover

Learner policies run alongside the owner's insurance, so a bump while you practise doesn't cost them their no-claims.

How it works

  1. Start with the reg. We look up the car from the plate, so there's less to type.
  2. We match you with specialists. Your details go to UK brokers who arrange this kind of cover every day.
  3. They call you with quotes. Compare what comes back, ask questions, and only go ahead if it's right.

Do learner drivers need their own insurance?

Yes. Every driver on a public road must be insured, and that includes learners. If you practise in a parent's or friend's car, you need to be covered to drive it. That can mean being added to their policy, or taking a separate learner policy that sits alongside theirs.

A separate learner policy is popular because any claim you make goes on your policy, not theirs. Their no-claims bonus is not touched. Lessons with a driving instructor in their own car are covered by the instructor's insurance, so you only need your own cover for private practice.

Who can supervise a learner driver?

Your supervisor must be at least 21 years old, qualified to drive the type of vehicle you are learning in, and have held a full licence for that type of vehicle for at least three years. They must also be fit to drive and not using a phone while supervising you.

The supervisor is responsible for you while you drive, so they can be prosecuted if you break the law and they didn't do enough to stop it. Some learner policies also ask about the supervisor, so have their details ready.

What do I need before I can practise?

You need a valid provisional driving licence, insurance that covers you as a learner, a supervisor who meets the rules, L plates on the front and back of the car (D plates are an option in Wales), and a car that is taxed and roadworthy with a current MOT if it needs one.

Learners can only drive on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a car fitted with dual controls. Private practice with a family member must stay off them.

What happens to learner insurance when I pass my test?

Learner policies are usually written for provisional licence holders, so the cover normally ends or must change once you pass. Tell the insurer straight away. You will then need a policy as a full licence holder before you drive on your own, even for the drive home from the test centre.

What affects the price of learner driver insurance?

Insurers look at your age, the car you practise in, where it is kept, the length of cover you want and the level of cover. The car's value and insurance group matter, as does whether the policy is comprehensive. A broker can quote different lengths so you can compare them side by side.

Learner driver insurance questions

What happens after I submit?

Your details go to specialist brokers who deal with learner driver insurance every day. One of them will call you to run through your options and quotes.

Is there any obligation?

None. You can take a quote, ask for changes, or walk away. Nothing is bought until you say so.

Who are the brokers?

UK-based insurance brokers authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Kompare Limited (FCA reference 794660) is an appointed representative of Rainbow Connected Limited (FRN 749881).

How long does it take?

The form takes about two minutes. Brokers usually call back during working hours.

What if I don't know the reg?

Tap "Don't know your reg?" under the plate and tell us the make, model and year instead.

Does the owner's insurance still count?

Yes. Learner cover sits on top of it and is separate, so their policy and no-claims are untouched if something happens.

Can I get learner insurance on my own car?

Yes. Some learner policies cover a car you own as well as a car belonging to someone else. Tell the broker whose car it is and they will look for the right policy.

Does my supervisor need to be on the policy?

Not usually as a driver, because they are supervising rather than driving. Some insurers ask for their details. The broker will tell you what each insurer needs.

Can I drive on the motorway as a learner?

Only with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls. Practice with a parent or friend must stay off motorways.

Do I need L plates?

Yes. L plates must be shown on the front and back of the car while you drive as a learner. In Wales you can use D plates instead.

Can I build a no-claims bonus as a learner?

Some learner policies let you earn a no-claims discount you can carry forward once you pass. Not all do, so ask the broker if it matters to you.
