What modified vehicle insurance can cover

Every modification declared and priced in. That's the whole point of a specialist policy.

How it works

  1. Start with the reg. We look up the car from the plate, so there's less to type.
  2. We match you with specialists. Your details go to UK brokers who arrange this kind of cover every day.
  3. They call you with quotes. Compare what comes back, ask questions, and only go ahead if it's right.

What counts as a car modification for insurance?

To an insurer, a modification is any change from the car's original factory specification. That includes performance work like remaps and exhausts, but also cosmetic changes such as alloy wheels, body kits, wraps and tinted windows. If you are unsure whether something counts, declare it and let the insurer decide.

Do I have to tell my insurer about modifications?

Yes. Your insurer needs accurate information to cover the car. If a modification isn't declared, a claim can be reduced or refused, and the policy can be cancelled. That includes changes a previous owner made. It's why specialist modified car policies ask about every change in detail.

Will modifications make my insurance more expensive?

Some will and some won't. Insurers look at whether a change makes the car faster, more attractive to thieves, or more expensive to repair. Performance changes and high-value parts tend to affect the price more. Some security upgrades may be viewed favourably. The only way to know is a quote with everything declared.

What is agreed value cover for a modified car?

Agreed value means you and the insurer agree what the car is worth, including its modifications, when the policy starts. If it is written off or stolen, the claim is based on that figure, subject to the terms. A standard market value policy may not reflect money spent on parts and labour.

Insurers usually want photos, receipts or a valuation to agree the figure. Keep records of what you fit and update the insurer when you make further changes.

What do I need to get a modified car quote?

Have the registration and a full list of modifications ready, with the parts and who fitted them. The broker will also ask about your driving history, where the car is kept overnight, its security, your annual mileage and roughly what the car is worth with the modifications included.

Modified vehicle insurance questions

What happens after I submit?

Your details go to specialist brokers who deal with modified vehicle insurance every day. One of them will call you to run through your options and quotes.

Is there any obligation?

None. You can take a quote, ask for changes, or walk away. Nothing is bought until you say so.

Who are the brokers?

UK-based insurance brokers authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Kompare Limited (FCA reference 794660) is an appointed representative of Rainbow Connected Limited (FRN 749881).

How long does it take?

The form takes about two minutes. Brokers usually call back during working hours.

What if I don't know the reg?

Tap "Don't know your reg?" under the plate and tell us the make, model and year instead.

Will declaring mods put the price up?

Sometimes, but not declaring them can void a claim entirely. The brokers quote with the mods included so there are no surprises.

Do I need to declare modifications made by a previous owner?

Yes. The insurer covers the car as it is, so declare everything on it, whoever fitted it.

What if I modify the car mid-policy?

Tell the insurer before or as soon as you make the change. They may adjust the policy or the premium. Don't wait until renewal.

Are alloy wheels a modification?

If they weren't fitted at the factory for that model, yes. Even wheels from a higher trim of the same car can count, so declare them.

Can I cover my car at shows and track days?

Some specialist policies include car shows, and track day cover is often separate. Ask the broker what each policy includes.

Are my spare parts covered?

Some modified car policies offer cover for spare parts kept at home. Limits vary, so mention them to the broker.
