Insurance basics

Vehicle insurance

The vehicle insurance Kompare can help with, the details you need to give, and the three levels of cover from third party only to comprehensive.

There is more to vehicle insurance than cars. Whatever you drive, you need to insure it to use it on the road legally. Kompare helps young drivers, taxi drivers, couriers, motor traders and everyone in between find the policy that suits their vehicle.

What vehicle insurance does

Vehicle insurance gives you financial protection against damage and injury resulting from accidents. Depending on the level of cover, it can also protect against theft of your vehicle and damage caused by fire or the weather.

The vehicle insurance we can help with

You fill in a short form, and a specialist FCA-authorised broker from our panel contacts you to talk about quotes. Your policy is arranged with that broker. You can read more about how we work.

What details do I need to provide?

Details of the vehicle

You do not need to know the exact model. The registration number is usually enough to find the vehicle's details.

No claims bonus

You will be asked how many years of no claims bonus you have. Your current insurer can give you proof of this.

Named drivers

You will need the personal and licence details of anyone else you want to add to the policy.

Licence details

You will need to say what type of licence you hold and how long you have held it.

Previous claims

You will be asked about any accidents or claims in recent years, usually the last five.

Driving convictions

If you have any points or disqualifications on your licence, you will need to give the details.

What are the different levels of cover?

When you take out a vehicle insurance policy, you will be asked which level of cover you want. There are three.

Comprehensive

This is the most extensive level of cover. It includes third party, fire and theft cover, and also covers damage to your own vehicle, even if an accident was your fault.

Third party, fire and theft

This covers you if you are responsible for damage or injury to other people, passengers or their property. You are also covered if your vehicle is stolen or damaged by fire. If you cause an accident, it will not pay for repairs to your own vehicle.

Third party only

This is the most basic level of cover and the legal minimum. It covers damage and injury you cause to other people and their property. There is no cover for your own vehicle, so if it is damaged or stolen you cannot claim back the cost.
